In an interview, renowned percussionist, drummer, and music composer Ranjit Barot shared his thoughts on the impact of the information explosion and social media. He noted that while they can be empowering, they also have the potential to alienate individuals. Barot expressed concern that some musicians reliant on social media may lack the skills needed to perform live. On the other hand, talented artists who do not engage effectively on social platforms may struggle to gain recognition. Embracing different trends, Barot emphasized the importance of discerning between the positive and negative aspects of each trend. He highlighted the significance of collaboration in elevating one's skills, noting that surrounding oneself with more talented individuals helps to foster improvement. Barot also emphasized the importance of creating music with substance that can hold its own against the works of respected artists. Despite the challenges of the music industry, Barot expressed gratitude for being able to pursue a career in music.Subscription services charge a monthly fee, but only a small portion actually goes to the artists. With the advent of AI, some may view it as a tool for the lazy, but true talent and skill cannot be replaced by artificial intelligence. While AI may filter out those lacking talent, it cannot replace individuals with genuine talent and passion. There is a need for more artists to create high-quality music and transform the music industry.
I am hopeful about the future of the music industry. In India, there is a tendency to oversimplify music, making it a niche for intelligent music creators. The industry is currently dominated by individuals who lack motivation and do not set benchmarks. Celebrity endorsements often influence public opinion, perpetuating a stagnant cycle. However, there are pockets of excellent music out there, such as the works of AP Dhillon and Diljit Dosanjh. We require more artists dedicated to producing quality music to revolutionize the music scene.
"My biggest influence was my mother, Sitara Devi." I have worked tirelessly to reach where I am today. The seed of my determination was planted by my mother, a renowned classical kathak dancer named Sitara Devi. She was a source of boundless motivation and a role model for many. Witnessing her unwavering dedication and energy inspired me, and I believe I have inherited her spirit and drive. This influences my constant pursuit of innovation, expression, and meaningful interactions with others.
